Default variable speed routing

I am aware that as the size of the router bit increases, the speed of the router should be reduced. I don't have a variable speed router and was wondering if I could simply plug the router into an outlet that was connected to a reostat. Is it possible that this could damage the router. Of course, the other disadvantage is that one can only guess at the speed, although one could set the speed to give the optimal results.

Any advice?
Thanks,

Dean
