If you are attempting to sharpen a chisel, never try to do it "free hand". You'll never get a true sharp edge. To add to Bob's reply, there are many, many books out there. The best advice to be given... is just like with anything else, "patience".
If my memory serves correctly, the proper method is what's known as the "3-step" method with some sort of grinding/sanding grit, (not sandpaper or a grinder).
