As some of you may know, I spent Friday at the Perth wood show in Western Australia, and amongst the goodies that came home with me was a TR001 Triton router for permanent use in my router table to replace an ageing Makita.
As yet I haven't even switched it on, however I have made some observations.
I'm glad that it wasn't intended for plunge routing because the plunge action is woeful, it does not plunge smoothly and requires too much pressure. I was taught that it should be possible to plunge a router with the palm of one hand, and this is certainly what my Makita 3612C is like. Part of this problem could be that there is only one spring which I suppose has to be stronger than the more usual two springs, but doesn't lead to an even plunge. By the way, this spring can be quickly removed by loosening one screw and removing the retaining cap followed by the spring. For table use this is great' no major disassembly required.
The next point that for me precludes it for plunge routing is the fact that a sub-base would be required for template guides. There are a number of plus points for table use. Cutters can be changed from ABOVE the table and height adjustment is a breeze. Made in Taiwan, the overall finish is world class, the separate base and fence are heavy gauge well finished steel which can act as a circle cutting jig as well as a side fence. Once I've used it for a while I shall come back to this thread with a more in-depth report.
