Default Don't over look the obvious....

...when you have problems with your tools. I've got a Craftsman router, got it from a friend and never used it before this week. Attempted to take the bit out and had to resort to almost prying it out as it was stuck fast in the tapered portion of the collet. Thought it must be dirty or rusty. Cleaned it good, and it still stuck fast the next time I put a bit in it. After much heated discussion between myself and the router, I decided I must need a new collet for it. Of course, since this is Sunday, the local Craftsman parts depot is closed.

After looking at the collet nut, and the tapered part of the collet again, I realized the problem... the "E" clip that holds the collet and nut together was missing, so when I loosened the collet nut off, it would not pull the collet out of the motor shaft. I will pick one of those clips up and see if it makes a difference.

Anyway, the point of this is to caution you to not miss the forest because you can't see past the trees. Sometimes the solution is right in front of us.
