As has already been mentioned --
'isolate the bearing' is woodie techie talk for
Move the fence forward so the bearing isn't touched.
And yes -- making shallow cuts is important for several reasons.
Including but not limited to - less 'grabbing' on the wood and smoother final cut.
As to whether to do this by raising the router a little at a time or by moving the fence -- that would depend on your preferences and setup.
With my setup it is MUCH easier to adjust the fence than the router depth.
