Situations that call for climb routing might be where the woods grain is highly eratic and climb cutting would reduce the chance of tear out. This is best performed with a template and guide to help prevent the router taking off on you, and making a very small cut. Most times you will be able to simply flip the wood over so you are not climb cutting, but there are some jobs you can not work around.
