Hi tpyke

The tree rings will tell you all you need to know..
You don't want them,,,in the center, it works very well if you use 2" to 2 1/2" wide the norm...just flip them over and glue them up, the wider the stock the bigger the cup..this is true for women also it all falls in to place.. mother nature is just that way...

Some use the 6" rule but if the tree was only 8" to 10" in dia. well you see what I mean.
