Another good solution is to glue a layer of plastic laminate on your table top. This tends to last very well, can be marked with a pencil and easily cleaned. ShopNotes has a plan that uses 3/4" plywood with two layers of 1/4" hardboard on top. This is wrapped with hardwood and then covered with laminate on top and bottom to prevent warping.
