Default Day 10 continued
Report Post Report This Post!

I started on the drawer faces. Using the book-matched pieces I had resawn and planed earlier, I cut them to size. They will be glued to the front of the drawers when I get them done.

Default Day 11 Drawer slides
Report Post Report This Post!

Now it's time for the drawer slides. This is the reason the case hasn't been glued together yet. You need to take the case apart to do this step.

I started by using a 3/8" forstner bit to countersink the slide attachment holes. These will accomodate the #6X 1/2" flathead metal screws and small brass washers that attach the slides. You then drill a slightly oversize hole the rest of the way through. This allows for a small adjustment to the slides.

Using the slide jigs made earlier, place a small piece of double sided tape to the ends of each runner, then put the runners in the jig. Now, slide the jigs and runners into the case and press them against the sides. Remove the jig and the slides are in position.

Take the case apart and the sides will have the rails in place.

Using a knife, score a line on the top of each rail so you can reattach them in the proper place. Drill pilot holes for the screws, remove the tape, and reattach the runners, using the scores as guides.

Put the case back together, put the drawers in, and test for smooth operation. Adjust the slides as needed.

When satisfied, you are ready to finally glue the carcase together.

Looking good Mike

Where are you going to get your hardware from ?, brass or chrome ?

Corner protects, handles, drawer pullers, locks, hinges, are you going to put locks in all the drawers or just a bar type the locks the drawers when the top is locked down ? or just a front cover over the drawers ?

It's going to be nice PLEASE if you don't mind how much do you have in it...not counting the labor of love of making it..

Thanks Bj. Been a great project and has kept me out of trouble.

I'm going to use brass hardware on it. The hinges are from ACO hardware, and I got the handles from HD today. Fold down type just like the ones I used on the cradle box. Still looking for the right drawer knobs.

No corner protects are planned, and I'll be using 2 rods inside to lock the drawers. Then a mortise lock on the front.

My first load of lumber was $140. That included 3 cherry boards, 1 curly maple, and 1 hard maple. Only used the cherry and had to buy some more of that. 8 or 10 poplar 1X3X6' and a couple 3X4X6'. I have a lot of scrap from this project.

I probably have $225-$250 in it now. That doesn't count a few hundred in gasoline to get everything. That also doesn't count the new saw, 4 Freud blades, and the new planer. Otherwise it would total about $2,000.

One tip to anyone wanting to build something like this. I played holy heck trying to find 1/4" hardboard for the drawer bottoms. I finally settled on gluing 1/8" boards together because I could not find any 1/4". I tried every HD and Lowes around, and called every lumber store within a reasonable distance. So get that hardboard first, or decide to use something else.

I glued the carcase together today, and did some tweaking of the drawers. Got the bottom screwed on, and am getting ready to edge the top and put the front panels on the drawers. That might not happen for a couple weeks. We're leaving for Pennsylvania Thursday morning for the weekend, then going to Washington D.C. for the most part of next week. Won't be back till Memorial day. So, one more picture till then.

I can't wait either John. It's getting near completion now. Some final sanding and tung oil.

Found some time today to do some work on it. I had decided to rout around the drawer edges so the front wouldn't have such a blank stare look about it.
Glued the panels to the drawers, and this is how it'll sit till I get home to finish it. I'm liking it more each day.

Mike I was carving today and got some tools out of my HF chest and thought about your cherry chest and since I have been on the road for the last 2 weeks figured I missed a bunch. Man is that sweet looking. The cherry fronts look awesome. Matching the grain looks awesome. Nice job Mike. It's easy to see this was a ton of work but you have knocked it out. If you are going to be using pure tung oil, be prepared for some long drying time, it looks beautiful but stays tacky for a long time.
