Default Memorial day work
Report Post Report This Post!

I hope everyone had a great day. A C-130 and a B-25 flew over today as the Yankee Air Force flies some of their planes for parades. Beautiful sight.

Had a wonderful 4 days is Washington D.C. and even got to watch Mr. President get on his helicopter and fly away while we were standing in the Red Room of the White House. Alas, it didn't crash. Oh well.

Finally got back to work on the tool chest today. Made a jig to rout out for the hinges. It slips over the back wall of the box and is fastened by a brad nail. Used a 5/16" guide and a 1/8" bit.

I then took the guide wood off it and used it to do the top.

I also sanded the carcase, top and drawers. I then put one coat of tung oil on it. Starting to look pretty good now.

I'm still looking for the right drawer knobs. Went to Woodcraft yesterday but they only had 1, 3/4" brass knob. And at $8 each, I decided to look around. I found some online that I may order.
Tomorrow is another day. I'll get the finish coat on it, and it'll be done, except for the knobs.

Hi Mike
Looking Good

I have not seen your name stamp on it yet, is it inside or on the bottom...I know you said you didn't think you are going to put brass corner guards on it But I would suggest you do nothing can tick you off more than to get it all don't and you hit the corner and chip out some stock....after all it's tool box and I'm sure you will move it around the shop in time after you pet it for a year or so ...

The snapshots below are NOT to high jack your post just a show and tell about the hardware...
Below you will see 3 wooden tool boxes, all with dif. hardware but all have corner protecting hardware in place...

What an education studying this thread has been. not only is your workmanship of professional standard, but the photo-tutorial must be the envy of other forums and appreciated by every member of this forum as must be your workshop set-up. There can be no doubt that "Harry" will be thrilled when he sees this thread.

Default Time to put tools in the tool chest
Report Post Report This Post!

Thanks Electron. It has been a heck of a learning experience for me also. My first true "Cabinet making".

Bj;
I have some brass stock that I may cut and bend for the bottom corners. Not sure I want to put any on the top. Thanks for your concern.

The tool chest is to the point where I can say it is done. I have yet to install the lock, and that may not be done. I finally got my branding iron hot and laid it up against the inside, bottom drawer. Nobody can walk off with it and say they made it.

I've been to all manner of hardware stores looking for the drawer knobs. Woodcraft had what I wanted but only 2 of them in stock. I finally got a tip from a fellow at my favorite "Toy store" about looking across the street. It was a Habitat for humanities store where people donate overstocks, items from demolished homes, etc. I found the knobs I wanted. A little larger than I was hoping to get, but they did the job. And at $2 each, they were a great deal. I wanted 3/4" knobs but found 1". If I find the same style in a 3/4" I'll replace the 3 upper knobs.

I took the finished chest outside so the sun would shine on it. I must say I'm very pleased with the results. Here ya go all. Thanks for hanging with me while this project was being done.

Now I'm thinking of a 2 drawer lower cabinet to put it on. I have extra knobs.

Hi Mike,

It has turned out quite beautiful!! I have to agree with BJ about putting on corner protectors, atleast on the bottom corners, especially if you do decide to make that lower "box".

I know you wanted the 3/4" knobs but, those 1" knobs, look just perfect.

I must say, this has come out far better than that of what a person can purchase from a store or manufacturer. Job well done my friend.

I like the knobs but I think they have turned a tool-chest into a high quality piece of bedroom furniture, especially if it does end up with a cabinet below it. I confess to being no expert but I think that flush Brass ring pulls would have been the order of the day. Harr

, I hear you say, they can't be had for $2.00 a piece, very true but imagine this scenario, many years in the future, a man is saying to his son, "son, you see this magnificent tool chest, well your great, great grandfather almost went broke making it, so, after I'm gone, it will be yours and I want you to promise me that you will take great care of it to one day hand it down to your first born son, together with the story.

Look at page 2 on this link to see what I'm talking about.
