A Wood Experience

Folks, we want to try something special, a contest with a simple woodworking project and some valuable prizes. Here is the deal:

• Make a simple plaque
• Post a picture
• Post a description of the wood
• Post your experience with the routing technique
• Win a valuable prizes
• The contest ends July 31, 2009.

The project is a Simple Picture Plaque:
The picture plaque is very simple 5 ½ X 7 ½ X 3/4” piece of material that has a 1/4” round over profile routed on the two edge and two ends of the front face then the router bit is changed to the 1/4” Cove bit and route the cove profile on the two edges and two ends of the back face.
For the best “Creative Design Category” the only restriction is the overall size must be no greater than 5 ½ X 7 ½ X ¾. Adding creative features is left to the imagination of you … the contest participant.

The three Wood Species:
The wood for this project can be Ash, African Mahogany or Lyptus. I will start a thread on each but they will be spaced about a week apart. You may use one or all three. If you have the wood great… start working.
If you need these woods we have assembled a package with a board of each, 6”+ x 24”. That is enough for nine plaques. Delivered to your door in the lower 48 for $39.00, in Canada $49.99. Simply click HERE to order.

Here is what you do to participate:
First choose one or all three of the Contest Categories in which you will participate. Select the wood or woods you will use. Make a picture plaque using one or all of the selected woods. You may enter up to three times. Your plaque may be plain or dressed up with additional routing or inlay. Finally, you must post a picture of your finished plaque and post your comments about the wood or routing technique in the appropriate thread.

Category 1, Best Creative Design:
In this category you are free to expand your vision of a simple 5 1/2” X 7 1/2” plaque. Add a shelf, wood inlay or maybe inset a metal plaque. Bottom line… add something unique. Post a picture of your finished plaque.

Category 2, Best post about the wood:
In this category we are looking for the best description of the specialty wood species used in the contest. It will include being able to collect and post the most information. The idea is to tell other woodworkers what to expect when working with this wood. How does it cut, rout, sand or finish. The more information about the wood the better. The best post wins. Post a picture of your finished plaque.

Category 3, Best post about the routing technique:
This category is about posting you're routing experience. Discuss how the material cuts across the grain and with the grain. Is the feed speed and spindle speed consistent to other common material? How does the density and other features of the wood work when cut by the router. What went smoothly or poorly while cutting the profiles? The best post with the most complete information wins. Post a picture of your finished plaque.

Awards:
There will be three prizes in each category. Nine prizes in total.
1st Prize:
• Lifetime membership to the Router Workshop Video Series (Value $279.00)
• Copy of “the Router” and “Router Jigs and Fixtures” by Bob and Rick Rosendahl
• A $25.00 gift certificate to buy Oak Park Router Accessories.
2nd Prize:
• Copy of “the Router” and Router Jigs and Fixtures by Bob and Rick Rosendahl
• A $25.00 gift certificate to buy Oak Park Router Accessories.
3rd Prize:
• A $25.00 gift certificate to buy Oak Park Router Accessories.

Deadline:
The contest ends July 31, 2009.
