| Registered User Jr. Member | Ok, as a newb I thought I'd have a go. I completed this drum yesterday having spent absolutely ages on the hoops. It's a 20 stave shell (10 each) of oak and teak recycled timber. Both woods came from some old reclaimed floor boards. The side of each stave was correctly angled and glued together then clamped. The shell was then turned on my lathe. I cut the bearing edges on the top and bottom of the shell using a 45 degree chamfer cutter in the router table. The edges are a sharp internal and external 45 degrees. The shell was then lightly oiled with some tung and finally multi coated with clear gloss acrylic lacquer. The hoops are made from 1.5mm Finnish birch ply and finished with several coats of oil. The slots for the snare wires were cut with a straight router cutter in a hand held machine whilst clamped between the 2 surfaces of a work bench. To date, this has been my most successful stave drum build (I'm fairly new to stave drum building!!). |

| Registered User | This is a hutch that I made for my daughter and husband as a Christmas gift. Over the years, I have made a dining table, pair of night stands, TV enclosure, Wall Entertainment Center, Wall toy storage for grandson and several other projects for my two daughters. All was self taught if you exclude my High School "bowling pin" lamp and 'hot dog electrocuter'. I used plans from "Plans Now/WoodSmith Mag" for their Country Hutch. | Registered User New Member | We needed a mirror over the sofa when we decorated our family room. My wife’s theme was metal and wood. The wood part fell to me. We agreed on a design that was published in Woodsmith magazine. I have never really done a veneer project before so the challenge was exciting. The frame is poplar and the main veneer is Carpathian Elm Burl with Tulip wood banding. The corner blocks are Tropical American Mahogany (TAM) with an emblem surrounded by edge face mahogany veneer. Moldings were crafted from TAM using a router table and a round over bit. Mirror is finished with Danish Tung Oil and 3 coats of a 1lb. cut shellac. Veneer was attached using a hand operated vacuum pump and plastic bag designed for crafting skateboards. Total construction time approx. 40 hrs. |
