Smile Latest PC #890 plunge base.

Okay. I didn't like it much, but I sent for the NEW plunger base for 890PC. Came this morning. Total $135 with shipping (gulp). It certainly DOES look different and it DOES feel like it might plunge better. It is clearly marked Type 3 Model #8931. I mention this only because I have heard some people are receiving the "old" base when they order the new, type 3 base. It came with a "dust deflector" clear base above the router base. It also has a centering pin ( a solid steel 1/2 inch pin 3 inches long!!!!) and a little plastic cone to help you center motor in base. Also an adapter for vacuum hose.
I'll probably commission someone to make me a square 7"X7" base for it bored for PC brass guides.
I will let you guys know how it works as soon as I give it a try. Right now it is still 18 below zero which means its 15 below zero in the shop. By the time I fire up the wood stove and get temperature up it'll be close to beer time....and the day is shot anyway by then.
Maybe tomorrow.

Note to myself: I am still totally PO'ed at PC for making me spend this amount of money to correct what is really THEIR problem and I want them to know this is probably my LAST PC tool. Don't like to be rude.....but I believe in the Golden Rule.

Okay, a final note. Whoever said the new type III base makes the 890 a whole different router hit it right on the head. I have had a chance to play with it now and it is MUCH better than the crap my router came with. I am a LITTLE suspicious about the little knobs for dept setting-sorta flaky little things. But what IS curious is the centering pin they include..it is solid steel three or four inches long and half an inch in dia! Huh? A plastic one would work. Why not put all that steel into the knobs and locking device for the depth rod. Ha!!
I am still NOT happy with P-Cable. They should have GIVEN us a better base and not made us pay-in my case over $130- for a base that works. But IF you want to do it and IF you have the money it is my opinion that the new base makes it a much better router.
Okay. That is is. I won't ramble on and on any more. Promise.

I've heard here and from the repair shop I take my tools to that PC has had problems with the quality control of their routers and that the 890 had some probs with the "OLDER" plunge bases.

Maybe I'm lucky to have all older PC tools.
Except for the newest 75182vs, (so far 3 mos. runs like a champ in the BD pro-lift) and the 2nd slightly older, (2005) 694vk, (690 with fixed/plunge base and case).

All the rest are before the company was sold to, (I think Dewalt?¿) and I've never had any problems with any of them, the oldest 7537 from the mid to late 80s is still running true albeit not quite as often. The Lam kit, (cira 1991) still cuts Formica and has done some lettering and hinge plate morticing.

I hope it works well for you for many more years than you need it to.

Yes Ghridh, I take your point the P-C tools of the past. I have them too. But the last two items I have purchased have not been much and what I resent most of all is the attitude of the company. It is what has become typical, expected and tolerated by too many people. It is what compelled me to quit buying American made cars in 1965. I am only looking at a couple of things right now and I am NOT going to look at Porter-Cable. Why should I? They obviously don't give a rats a-- what I think about them.
Thank you. That is all.

Hi Birch

Just think you could have had a V-8 ,, the brand new Craftsman combo kit is only 100.oo bucks and it puts PC to shame, VS,Light, vac.pickup, edge guide, with 2 collets, clear base plate that will take on the PC type guides, plus it can be mounted in the router table and can be adjusted from the top of the table, lift kit build in,plus if you want to make a ski jig down the road it will take on 3/8" diam.rod unlike the PC,etc. with two bases all in a nice case.. all at about 1/2 the price of a PC,Bosch,DeWalt.

You be right Bob3. When I hooked up the dogs andmushed into the SEARS trading post they had sold OUT of those routers. Either they are very good tools or your aura and reccomendations reach into the cosmos. Hee Hee.
Incidentally, I have to amend my comments about about cars. I DO buy American pickup trucks. They'd have to pry the keys to my Powerstroke (the older one) from my cold dead hands. Oh, and I had a couple Corvettes.
That is all. Gotta go out and snare a rabbit for dinner.

HI Bob

I would say so

I always try and get the biggest bang for my buck, I now have 5 of the Craftsman routers ,I do like the Pro. ver. the best, it's a bit more in price but it's hard to beat 3 bases in one combo kit for a 100.oo on sale at Sears at one time, (210.oo the norm) I'm sure you recall that one .....I got that tip off from you I'm not to sure, I said thanks at that time but I'm saying it now..most routers now days are carbon copys of each other but some are just a bit lower in price... cheap old SOB I am..it's always nice to get all the extras in one combo kit ..

=====

Levon got one also and other members if I recall..

Hi Birch

The smart ass comment was about the V8, was about tomato juice..at one time they add a commercial on TV about tomato juice,,when the guy on the TV had some normal tomato juice and the other guy said you could have a V8 , it's the same thing with just a bit more flavor ,just more bang for your buck thing..
