Default Wood, wood everywhere.....
Report Post Report This Post!

Hi All,

I live in an extremely rural part of northwestern PA with lots of hills and trees..... BUT.... there is a very limited supply of nice woods to choose from to do things I would like to do. Mostly what is available is construction grade from the two sources we have in town.

I'm sure many of you have bought nice woods over the internet. Could you please give me some links and any personal experiences you've had buying like that.

Would you please share with me.

I suggest giving the woodworkers source a try. Keith is kind enough to discuss different woods with us in the wood identification forum. You will find a link in that forum to the store. I have ordered from them and was pleased with the results.

Shipping pallets. I've gotten some nice wood out of those.

AxlMyk..... I didn't think of that. My sister works for a firm that cuts and installs granite.... I'll have to find out what they do with the pallets or whatever they use.

Great thought.... thanks.

Hey Mike.... I've just got to look around this forum more. There seems to be everything here but the kitchen sink..... and that's probably here if I look hard enough. <big grin>

Thanks

Hi

Let the UPS truck drop it off at your door step, sure saves on gas and time.

I do recommend getting the craft wood stock ( 1/4" to 1/2" ) that most of your projects will be made with the norm..

About what does it cost to ship, say five 5 sq. ft packs (60 lbs) to your house.

Here in Alaska, mail-order wood is prohibitive for all but the most expensive materials. For example, five 5 sq. ft. packages of 1/2" Ambrosia Maple would cost $75 from Steve Wall Lumber (Bob's example above). Shipping it by UPS ground adds $225.46 in freight. If I were to send case and convince them to ship it via untrackable USPS parcel post, the freight would drop to $107.16.

Hmm.. I wonder how big of a luggage bag one could take with them on a commercial airline. Then all I'd need is a passenger already coming from the wood supplier's location...

You lucky dogs...

Jim
