Don’t know if anyone is interested as I guess most of you make furniture, but I make 1:13.7 scale figures for my garden trains (nearly dollhouse size). Here’s how it is done. Not shown, I ripped some strips of wood from ordinary 2x4 pine; nothing fancy; nothing exotic. Then, shown, I put a 1x1.5” or a bit bigger strip of wood on the table router and using a half inch round with bearing bit, I curved all 4 sides so that the wood is no longer rectangular but has rounded edges. I fed the wood thru from right to left. I try to vary the cuts and not be too precise Then, moved the fence back a bit and handturned the wood to shape the upper and lower torsos (we're talking upper body here minus head and arms). I found that feeding it the opposite way, left to right, works better (otherwise, it splinters). Here you can see the stick of torsos. Took all of maybe 10 minutes I then started a second stick for thighs/upper legs then used band saw to cut; some of these may be cut a second time later for tilted pelvis; notice they all are rough looking I then smoothed everything with the bench grinder; I surprised myself, using only 1 bit. Nothing scientific about measurements so I have a variety of body shapes and sizes for different heights and everything from ecto to mesomorph Here's my work area I need to make more body parts, stick them in separate bins, drill them, wire them, and then fill in gaps with putty or self hardening clay and paint and clothe them, or maybe not clothe them. Bob J. was the one who got me interested in routing small crafts, when he demonstrated how a wheel could be “turned” on a router. That got my creative juices flowing.

That's a very unique and interesting application of the router David. The garden trains look like a neat hobby also. Good show and good pictures too!

That is very creative, David, thanks for posting! I thought from the thread title "Routing human body parts", it was about taking the router and going around your own hand or foot or ?? for a pattern, or something! LOL ![]() ~Julie~

Very interesting. But I must saw, I thought you were going to talk about something like the time I stuck my thumb in the bit of my table mounted router.

Nice post David. I love the durable chair used with the band saw.

I am with the others, wasn't sure what to expect. I don't model and haven't for many years but I would love to see some shots of the railroad. What I did see makes me ask if it is live steam? I would love to start a garden railroad, but one hobby is enough and if you don't believe that just ask Honey.

Hi, Thanks all. Xplorx4, Here's 2 YouTubes, first is about 15 seconds other is 2 minutes. I build all my track and trains from scratch using wood and steel. I also do resin and metal casting. I'm doing 7/8 scale using O gauge (32mm), which represents 18" gauge in the real world so I'm in a distinct minority of modelers. Most of these are short industrial lines found scattered around the world. I base my stuff on real plans. It's got a long ways to go. A steel plant with real BBQ furnace I can cook burgers on is likely my next projects, but I need to people the garden first, using my router. YouTube - DSCN6716 YouTube - view from the critter locomotive I use a combination of onboard battery only (DPDT switch operated); and some remote control I fabricated from motorboat ESC and land vehicle Xmitter/receiver. I also have a solar-powered cable car that hauls freight, which I tested and may set up soon. I see a ton of applications for my router from building figures, to freight and passenger cars to structures. I have built live steam but need to tune the cylinders Last edited by SE18; 07-10-2009 at 07:49 AM.
