Default rule of thumb for variable speed?

So I'm enjoying my new PC router, it's my second router but first serious attempt at more than just basic edge-routing. I knew from trolling around and reading a couple of books that I wanted to get a variable speed router- so I did.

I was just wondering if there was a general rule of thumb re:ratio of speed to bit size. I know my drill press has a little chart next to the gears that helps me choose the speed based on the size of the bit and type of material. My manual just basically says, 'your router has a variable speed control between 10,000 and 27,000 rpm. enjoy.' okay, so I added the last part...

Hi: Rule of thumb says the larger the bit the slower the speed of the router. You certainly don't want a large 2-3 inch bit to come apart at high speed, it can cause some serious damage, to the router, your shop, and to the operator. Woodnut65
