Just a few days ago, I received a cat. from a woodworking co. Thumbing through it I found a bit that seems interesting, at best. It is described as "compression up an down spirals". They, (the catalog), states this will stop tear-out.

I may be looking at it wrong but, woud this not put the chips right in the way and create "chatter" on the bit? Has anyone heard or seen such a bit?
If needed I'll try to find a link to the bit.

Ken, these bits are designed for material that has laminate or veneer on both sides. Simply put, they work.

You know I like routers bits so
I sent off one, I was not to sure what they said about the bit would be true, well it's almost true it will not stop the rip/chip out but it helps on veneered plywood , but it still rips if I plunge in or out ,just a bit of the plywood but it's great on the strait away.
All in all it's a great bit if you do alot of plywood and melamine work like I do, the little chips in formica can turn your day into a bad one real quick.

This 2 flute solid carbide bit is needed to get clean, chip-free and splinter-free cuts in composite sheet goods such as Melamine or 2-sided Formica/Laminates and veneered plywood.
The Up-shear/Down-shear design of the bit cuts toward the center of the sheet from both sides at once, saving time and eliminating waste.

Thanks Mike, BJ. Perhaps when the budget allows I may be getting one.
It just kinda worried me about the chips. I've had a few "mishaps" when chips got built up and the bit started to chatter, (made many pieces of kindling).

Ken, the compression bits are designed for edge trimming so there should be no way for the chips to build up. When working with veneer you can pre-score your trim line with a sharp utility knife to help prevent tear out. I have never had any chipping problems with laminate since I make sure I am using sharp bits.
