Thumbs down Free Hand Sign Router

Went thru and saved all post about free hand sign router system, learning all one could from the inputs of the doers.

Even bought a Dewalt trimer on closeout sale, was not my choise but couldnt past it up.

Was going to make a plastic base with handles as mentioned in one of the threads.

Was not intended to get rich but make enough for time and materials.

Was all excited, than on another forum there was mention
of sandblasting signs and that was the way to go.......Ya right

So what is the answer

Hi Pa's

Sandblasting works great but I use cork beads on plywood, I have tried sand but it's not to clean that's to say the sand is in the wood.
But it depends on what type of look you want to end up with, Norm ran a show today on a Molesworth cabinet (western type furn.) he did some doors and drawers that look neat just like making signs in a way, with some worm holes on the face frame and he used a small router with a 1/8" bit to make the worm looking holes/tracks.
He removed the back ground with a standard router and left the picture stand out about 1/4" or so.

In order to see them use the Sandblasting you will need to get the video from NYWS the small video (on line) will not show them using it.
It's ONLY about a 3 min. long clip ,on a big sign out side the sign shop.

One More NOTE*** Sandblasting, you will need a GOOD/BIG compressor
The one I use is set at 175lbs and 125 gal. and sometimes it's to small.

Not to sure what you mean ▼

Hi
You can get Sand in all types ,cork, sand, glass beads, etc. the cork works the best for me it's clean so to speak and will pickup oil ,resin, grease, etc.

I made a Sandblasting cabinet if you want to see a snapshot just ask and I will post it, it will save on the clean up plus it keeps the mess from going all over the shop.

OK got it about the cork beads.

Do you farm out your stencials, or do you have your own setup?

There are also companies that will rough cut (blast) signs to your specifications. And then all you need to do is clean up the letters and finish it.

See: http://www.signcraft.com/links.asp

You can make your own stencials, craft stores/office depot/office max have thin plastic you can cut out with a razor blade knife and use some double sided carpet tape and stick them down and fire up the Sandblaster.

(Cabinet) I will take a snapshot and post in a bit.
