Default question from newbie

I've been making wood wall hangings for about a month. It's the first time I ever made something out of wood.

Anyway, I've been using my jig saw to cut the shapes out. Someone mentioned making a template out of wood then using that as a guide and I could use a router with a cutting bit.

I have a router I have no idea how to use. But is this possible? I thought you had to cut the shape first then route the edges.

It would be like christmas if I could do it all at once. Well, I would have to learn how to use the router first--which I really want to do anyway.

Thanks in advance!

HI gracewriter

You are right on it takes template/pattern 1st...
Templates are for making more than one item the same way over and over..so to speak,,,

The router is a great copy machine, but it's hard to copy sharp corners, with a guide in your router, it can copy the pattern very easy...

I would say if you are using the jig saw stick with it

Thanks. I am making the same pattern shapes over and over, but wanted to start routing the edges too. Thought it would be nice to do it all at once.

Hi gracewriter

Then the router is the tool you want to use, make a template and use the
Ovolo Bit and it will do the job, it will cut the part out and round over the edges all in one shot..

To get an idea how templates and pattern making work using the router, check out some of the episodes of The Router Workshop available here:The Woodworking Channel Click on the video link in the tool bar and then hit the small arrow to move to the right until you find The Router Workshop tab and select a movie to watch. The Folding Table, part 1, has a demo of using an pattern and guide bushings, and there are others there as well.

The easiest way to do this is make a full size part. You then cut a new one with a bandsaw or whatever, slightly oversize, and use double sided tape to attach it to the template. Then use a flush trim bit in the router, using a router table. The bearing on the bit will follow your template and cut the new part exactly like it.

You will be limited to a 1/4" radius in corners, but it's an easy way to make duplicates.
