Could anyone let me know where I could find info on how to set router bits up? I just got my router bits from holbren a few days ago, and was fooling around with my raised panel set last night. They cut well, however, it took a lot of messin around to get them somewhat close to being a matching rail and style (to where the tops were flush). Is there somplace that lists a quicker way or simple way of doing this (other than setting up scrap pieces to refer back to)? Not just with rail and style sets, but others, as well?

I guess I should probably just go by a router book, eh?

I am not sure that a specific router book will help but what if we had a website that has specific learning objectives on how to set up router bits. would you be interested?

Example: Quick guideline and overview to the set up of your cutters.
(A) use a 1/8" piece of plywood to determine the height of the cope cutter. Set 1/8" plywood under the cope cutter as identified on photo and lower into position on the plywood. Lock router bit into position and remove the plywood. With a fence: isolate your bearing, lock fence, support the cope pieces and cut the cope.

(B) The bead cut, set the height of the bead cutter by matching the slot cutter to the tenon on the cope. See photo marked as (B) With a fence: isolate the bearing, lock fence and cut the bead.

(C) the panel cutter is the last operation. With a fence: isolate the bearing, lock fence and set the height of the bit to match "what's left over to the thickness of the groove of the bead cut." Remember The thickness of the panel will determine the position of the cutter height. After cutting the panel what's left over has to fit into the groove made by the bead cut.

That's it... be safe and always use a proper fence and push sticks. Good Luck and keep your fingers away from moving router bits.

I would be very much interested in a site like that. I know no question is a "dumb" question, but after a question is asked a different way 300 times, doesn't it start to get silly?
I think a site like that would be very helpful to us that are just starting out, and maybe to those that need refreshers. It would be like being able to watch the router workshop anytime of the day (well, as far as pointers, tips and stuff like that).

Thanks for your tips on how to set up the cutters! I'm not going to be able to get out there today, but I'll be trying it tomorrow! I could be back with questions

I love this site. For instance, the post about the spiral bits, up vs down. Never would have thought of the points that were made in that post. I probably would have just used the wrong bit, gotten angry and never figured it out. Ain't learnin fun?
