WELCOME to the Forums, konk!
Google Sketchup is a great program, and it's FREE!

Google SketchUp is quite limited, however...would regular sign makers or routers are in the business use such a program?

Konk

Are you talking a CNC router program, or a design program for sketching projects?

If you are talking about CNC router programs, I can say there are many different software programs on thew market and pricey.

Each operator has their favorite program (just like their favorite brand of tool) and each program has the features that they feel comfortable with. I have started a build of a CNC router and choose to use V Carve for the CAM/CAD operations, and Mach3 for the drivers.

If you are talking desiging projects, I agree with George, Google sketch up is great. It is free and reasonably easy to learn.

Have a great day
John
