Default Projects for the Holidays

Hello,

I am wondering what everyone is doing for the holidays, as far as woodworking projects are concerned. I know, I know, it's really, REALLY early, but I am trying to get a jump on this before I get consumed at work (again).

I have two projects that I want to accomplish:

1. I want to build a box (or two) for my boys so they can put their baseball and pokemon cards in. I already have some walnut and maple pieces in mind. I recently purchased an old Sears Dovetail Template and am now in the process of getting some template guides and a dovetail bit for my router.

2. I want to build some picture frames for family pictures to give as gifts. This one I haven't given much thought to, so if anyone has some dead simple ideas for creating a nice moulding with a router with some basic bits, I would be interested. I'm either going to go with a 5x7 or 8x10 frame size.

A third idea if I get the time is to build a kind of holder for two dishes for my in-laws dog - one for water, the other for food. I don't know the shape or form it would take, but I saw they had a plastic one (the horror!!) and thought maybe I could make one out of wood for them that would look infinitely classier.

So - what are your projects?

BTW - It should be noted that after finding this site, I have spent no less than one hour a day on this site reading and learning. I would not have found out about the absolutely excellent videos that Woodsmith provides for free. I am going to purchase their magazine in the next couple of months.

Visit your dollar store and find some small stainless steel bowls with a wide rim. Build the doggy diner to fit them. You don't know what shape? A bone! I have a very old plan for this, will dig it out and attach it asap.

Instead of just building picture frames be creative. Get your photo's together and then rout shapes in a board with the photo's in back. With a little thought you can add glass and a backing material. Perhaps build a variation on the Tile Clock with a photo in the bottom? (search the forums for the Tile Clock photos)
