Quartersawn: Planking cut from Lumber with it's width centered along the radius of the tree. This is often the most expensive cut, due to high wastage, but the most sought after due to it's superior dimensional stability and decorative quality. Quartersawn timber, on drying, shrinks very little in length and uniformly in both width and thickness, hence it will not cup and is much less suceptible to twisting. The endgrain (Growth ring pattern) in quartersawn boards runs at right angles to the width edge of the board.
Orthogonal: At right angles (90 Degrees) to.
No-Volt Switch: (Sometimes incorrectly called Zero Volt Switch). A safety device for On / Off switching of Mains power to rotating cutting machinery. The switch is usually a Double Pole, (for Two Phase operated equipment) or Three Pole, (Three Phase operated equipment) momentary contact switch which has a solenoid coil across the momentary contacts. As power is applied the coil energises and holds a mechanical latch to maintain the output contacts closed enabilng power to the equipment, energising current to the coil is self sustaining as a result of the operation of the latch. In the event of a momentary power failure the solenoid is de-energised by the loss of power and drops the latch allowing the output contacts to open and prevent power being re-applied until operator/ user action. No-Volt switches are usually fitted as standard to most woodworking machinery. The solenoid coils are input voltage rated, and switching current ratings vary, so be sure to replace like with like in the event of switch failure.
Zero Crossing Switch: A method used in electronic speed controllers for setting the trigger point for the power output electronics to drive the motor to the desired speed.
