Hi there,
Hello everybody, I'm in South Australia and a very keen woodworker. Woodworking has been a great interest of mine for half a century, and it has never waned. Lately, though, I have upgraded my equipment and want to concentrate on making such items as finger-jointed boxes and suchlike. Last November I built the New-fangled Workbench created by John White of Fine Woodworking Magazine and had a photo of it printed in a local national magazine.
At present I am looking at designs for finger-jointer jigs and Lynn's Jig appeals to me so I will have a go at making it.
I look forward to any contact with other members. Cheers for now. Bob.

Welcome to the forum Bob, for most of my long life I've interchanged the terms "box joint" and "finger joint" however, recently fellow member and good friend George (curious George) pointed out, quite rightly, that they were not the same, the box joint is square and used not surprisingly for boxes, whilst the finger joint is longer and tapered and used for joining boards length ways.
I'm sure that it's a jig for box joints that you're after and as mentioned by another good friend of mine, Dave, otherwise known as Dr. Zook, the Oakpark spacer jigs are cheap and simple. however, they don't supply to Australia. I got mine through yet another good forum friend. You may have gathered that this is indeed a very friendly forum where it's easy to form great friendships.
Because they don't ship to Australia, I'm sure they won't mind if you fabricate your own jigs.

For starters follow this link:

The best advice that I can give a newcomer to routing is, learn to use the router mounted, this can be as simple as a board held in a vice, with the router firmly attached and a simple fence held with clamps, and when he/she feels competant and confident in it's use and is familiar with all aspects of safety, THEN, and only then proceed to learn how to use the router hand held. This is MY opinion, and may or may not coincide with that of the forum management, but is based on a lifetime of woodworking.

Welcome to the forum, Bob

Always glad to have another Aussie join the forum.

Gifkins have added box joint jigs to their range. You might want to check them out.

Scroth, are all Auzzies wood workers? What, you progress from Sheilas to routers ;-)

Welcome to the bunch of you. You participate here by asking as well as answering questions. If you ask one question, 9 other guys/gals are too reticent to ask.

Enjoy

Thanks Dr. Zook, harrysin, xplorx4, jw2170, and allthumbs for your welcome messages, nice to be with you. Yes, harrysin, it is very easy to confuse box joints and finger joints and I am quite guilty of that. I obviously meant box joints, of course. Incidentally, I have just bought a brand-new Triton 2000 Workcentre from Banner Hardware in Mt. Gambier here in South Australia. They had two of them and I doubt if there are anymore new ones left in this country, such has been the demand for them since Triton closed down. I look forward to being in touch. Cheers for now. Bob.

All right, I'll bite:

what's the difference between a finger joint, and a box joint? Harry's description is fine except I go looking for finger joints and all I get are box joints. Are you saying that a finger joint is a reverse dovetail?
