Question What would you recommend?
Report Post Report This Post!

I'm interested in making some signs and don't know what kind of hand held router would be best. I have a heavy plunge router but somehow that seems like it might be over-kill. Would a laminate edge router work? If so how do you "plunge" the thing...should it be variable speed?? I have a sign making templates but haven't tried them yet. I hope someone can help me out.
Thanks,
Tonya

The very best thing you can do for yourself is to clamp a small piece of wood down with a letter template on it and give it a try with the tool you have. You never know, you may find that you don't need to spend any more money.
My opinion is that your router may work fine. It may be a little larger than you would like but then again maybe not.
Go out and try it once and come back and tell us what you think:-)

Tonya Reading your request re. what router to use has got me thinking. I sat down 5 minutes ago and made a sketch of what I might consider would work. I will not be able to confirm my approach to the problem until tomorrow after I return from the dentist appointment, and get into my workshop to try it out. I am a great believer of NOT posting a solution until I have tried it out first. I will PM you my answer as there are some members of the forum who do not consider my methods worth following.
