Default Newbie Here

Hi Everyone,

Got an urge to begin a little woodworking. Purchased a few power tools in the past couple weeks & trying to learn how to use them & complete a few projects. New products include Makita LS1013FL Miter Saw on a Ridgid AC9944 MS-UV base, Craftsman 21829 Portable Table Saw, Craftsman 17543 Router Combo, Craftsman 21335 Dust Collector & a DeWalt D55141FNBN Compressor & Brad Nail set. I also have the True Angle kit to learn how to install molding like a pro.

Initial project is to lay laminate flooring in a few weeks. Wife also wants me to replace tile around the fireplace with Mosaic tile. Also plan to add crown molding to the upstairs & various other projects when I improve my skills.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions & making forums like this such so informative.

Welcome to the forum Cman! Sounds like you got a goo set of tools going. If you want to use your table saw to cut that laminate be sure to get a blade made for laminates and laminate flooring. It can be very chippy stuff if cut with some blades. I use a Freud blade that was like 30.00 or something like that and it does very well on laminates, formicas and plastic coated melimine (sp?)

Thanks for the advice Corey. That's of the things I've learned in my journey the past couple weeks. I was thinking possibly getting a blade with 80 or 100, but I saw somewhere they are making a blade specifically for laminates.

I'm also trying to take classes on power tools & woodworking at the local community college, if it's offered this semester.

Has worked just fine for me. Taking classes is a great idea and you can get to use some tools you don't have and learn what you like and don't like to some degree.

Corey, you're right about using tools I don't have. I've been doing alot of reading on the internet....and I see some of the really nice projects require using jointers or planers. Not to mention band saws, drill presses, etc. Something I never considered. But I can see that if I take to this....I should have a jointer & planer in the next few months. I've already re-arranged my garage & as you can see the tools I've already bought are the kind that can be easily moved & stored.

It's funny....my wife started this with the laminate floor project. I have a 20 year old Craftsman circular saw (same blade, never sharpened or changed) & the cheapest Ryobi miter saw made. When she said she thought I could lay the laminate floor, I began looking at tools. I don't get the most expensive....but I try to get something that will last. She says I'm not obsessed...or is it possessed. I am getting things fixed around the house I have been ignoring for months.

Cman I have some nice power tools.. even some expensive ones and some not so expensive. They don't need to be top of the line to do the job. I still am using my cheapo Ryobi miter saw. Hey it works and has cut a hell of a lot of molding trim and crown molding in my house. Some folks will tell you to buy once... and get the most expensive tool you can afford. If we all did that we probably couldn't afford to buy wood or would be in debt up to our eyeballs for a hobby! If you do your homework, you can find good power tools for a decent price. Just be glad we live in the land of plenty and lots of choices cause it's not the case everywhere. I have a very small shop and have been woodworking for 20 plus years and still do not have a jointer or planer. Maybe some day... I think a band saw will be next!

Welcome to the forum Cman. It sounds like you may be able to persuade your wife to let you buy more tools. That's generally how I get new tools, she has a project and I need a tool for that project.
