| Registered User | So the kids are starting to leave the nest. Our time is being free'd up! Ya right ![]() So we do have lots to do around the house which we've procrastinated about for years. I was at the local big box hardware store recently buying a cheap brad nailer/compressor to help with a bunch of trim we need to put up. Got the mitre saw for fathers day So on the sales bench there was this refurbished Bosch 1617EVS router. Buddy burned the motor out and brought it back. I was assured a new motor was installed, and if there were any problems I could return it. The store is reputable and we've shopped there for years. I mentioned to my wife that if we had that we could do this job and that job and not have to pay for someone to come in. I've always been attracted to routers. They seemed like very creative toys. I'd looked into them before, so I knew a bit about them. Sales kid was there and I hummed and he dropped another $20 and I bought ![]() I get it home and decide to fire it up without a bit. Holy crap is she powerful! She's no electric drill! Realizing this can be a dangerous thing I go into research mode, bought a big old book on Ebay, been to every site on the net, decided to buy a table, one of those closeout Rockler bench things (best deal and product I could find) as we have little room, and I found an old craftsman bit I got for a present by my crazy mother who thinks woodworking would be good for me years ago. I'd like to do freehand routing, but I think using one secured to a table might be a safer way to start. So I'm gearing up to rout some tops for some knee-walls we have left to do. The others are painted pine, so I'll match these. It should be a good easy intro. Funny how something so simple can get the adrenalin flowing ![]() |

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | Welcome to the forums. The 1617's are my favorite routers, I own a pair along with a 1613 which is a plunge only version. When you table mount your 1617 you can remove the knob handles; this makes adjustments easier. Check the packaging, your router may have the new base with through the table height adjustment. It's not a big deal if it doesn't, and I wouldn't use that feature if I had it. It's far too easy to adjust the router under the table, and faster too.

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi Bradnailer, I know that you only used it as a figure of speech, but make no mistake, a router is no toy, if not used with caution it can be an extremely dangerous piece of equipment, but when understood can be the most versatile tool ever invented, and this forum is the place to learn just what it is capable of. Always spend that little extra for quality cutters as poor quality, and/or blunt ones can cause problems.
