| Registered User New Member | I am looking for a technique to make router templates for large script fonts ie. about 3 inch high letters. I print names from MSword and want to engrave them on wood projects. Any ideas? Thanks. |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | I'm sure that the member who recently posted a beautifully hand routed sign using a full size printout as a template will come back and offer his guidance. I hope so because yesterday my granddaughter asked me to make one for her mothers birthday, which fortunately is not till November.

| Retired Moderator Supreme Forum King | Me too, I would love to have a 2 inch set of script or old English templates for box work. Only way I know how to do it right now is buy hand routing or carving and that won't be happening... Corey

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | You really are amazing Bj. how you keep track of all these links. Thanks for these links, I hadn't been on the forum very long when Axlmyk made that sign, if he sees this post perhaps he will tell me how he supported the router, because on the large areas there would be nowhere for the router to sit except on the sign, and that wouldn't work. I'm sure that at that time the skis hadn't been introduced but that would seem the way to go in future.

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Thanks Harry I now think the skis would work well with this type of job just longer rods to support the router and keep it true to the stock ...=============== Quote:

| Registered User New Member | Thanks for the submissions. I was looking for suggestions on how to make templates to inscribe script fonts that do not rely on a steady hand to manually follow a pattern. The project involved making an aromatic cedar chest for a new daughter-in-law. In the end, I used the following technique: First, I used a word processor to print the text to size (letters about 3” high) onto a standard paper sheet. I glued this sheet onto a ¼” thick MDF board and used a scroll saw to cut outside the text lines and finished them smooth with files and sandpaper. (When round letters with center holes (a’s, o’s etc.) are encountered, a bridge was left to support the center piece.) By clamping the template over the target with ¼” scrap standoffs I now had a template that could support a small router base (Colt). The inside cutout edges were rubbed with graphite powder lubricant. Using the router on the lowest speed and with a 1/8” shank bit with a cutting burr on the end set to a 1/16” wood depth, the shank follows the template edges without cutting or burning. This way the routed text was exactly the same as the printed text. I manually routed the bridges to complete the round letters. Filling the rout with black Inlace epoxy and sanding it down to wood level gave quite nice results. This technique should work well for most fonts as long as the minimum line width cutout is greater than 1/8” to allow the bit shank to pass through without binding. I hope others will find this useful. Yeknod |
