| Registered User Forum Fanatic | Bj, The 5" Diameter shaper cutter is not unusual and is intended for 1-1/2" wide cut. Like I said earlier you may be able to get a little extension to the tongue but not to the profile itself and even that depends on the diameter of the collars on the machine. On the Ogee and Cove profiles this may not be too bad but for bevels it moves the transition line further into the visible field and this may not be desirable. Also, with vertical bits I don't think you could extend the bit high enough and still have enough shank in the collet. I think the most that is safely possible with nearly every cutter option discussed so far is maybe 1-9/16" which I think is not where the OP wants to get. The only other option I can think of is to use a non-backcutter bit, remove the bearing and use the fence to guide. This would get the width to as much as 1-21/32" but, again, it's only the tongue length that is extended. |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi Jim and Charles This is just a quick show and tell,, it works very well with the Vert. Bits.. ![]() ================= You can push it just a bit more with the collet extension but I didn't see any point to doing it for this quick show and tell,, it will make it 3 1/2" from the edge of the panel...plus you can use the back cutter bit if you want it flush with the inside of the door..this bit can be had also from MLCS.. The router that's in the Vert.Router table is a PC 690...on a VS control box.. And the shank of the router bit was all the way in collet ... ![]() http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shops...er_collet.html Last edited by bobj3; 11-15-2007 at 09:37 AM. |

| Registered User Forum Fanatic | Bj, A quick correction that it's 2-1/2" and not 3-1/2" from the edge according to your ruler. To take a bit with 1-1/2" carbide height and 1-1/2" of shank and try to make a cut that far from the base is not something I would recommend nor do I recommend extensions. Maybe MLCS does? BTW, I have got to get you linking to our site for tool and profile images instead of that other place you keep showing ![]() |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi Charles " other place you keep showing" hahahahahahahaha OK The picture shows 2 1/2" BUT with the extensions it can go 3 1/2" if not more.. I just wanted to show a quick show and tell ...The extensions, I have both 1/2" and the 1/4" one and they are great and work well The only thing I don't like about them is the wrench size,,,15mm and 18mm .....It's a pain to use 3 wrench system..plus one thing that's nice about the extensions, when I need to remove a cutter or bearing I just chuck up the extension in the vise on the flats and pop in the bit and do the work without doing any damage to the shank on the router bit..I could do it in the router but the parts may drop down in to the router.. it's not worth the chance...little screws and nuts and washers, shims, etc. as you know..---------- "To take a bit with 1-1/2" carbide height and 1-1/2" of shank and try to make a cut that far from the base is not something I would recommend" It's about the same when I make 5" tall Reversible Crown molding, the bit is 2 1/2" on the cutter part and the bit is about 4 " tall over all, I just run one side and then flip it over and make one more pass to get the job done, works great and it can be used the same way with many bits..see links below..tall crown molding is not cheap but I can make my own quick and easy, plus I don't need to buy a 8ft or 12ft long board to get a short one I need...for the top of cabinets, etc. See picture below http://cgi.ebay.com/1-PC-1-2-SH-2-1-...QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/1-PC-1-2-SH-2-5-...QQcmdZViewItem I had one of the extension with the Allen cap screw in the side but I didn't care for that one..out of balance at high speed...but ones from MLCS are true. I should note why I don't link to your site ![]() http://www.freudtools.com/ http://www.freudtools.com/c-12-industrial-bits.aspx No prices,, just pictures I think most want to know what the bits are going to cost them,,, Freud makes great bits but I use Amazon to get the prices and that takes forevery to find what I need to know about...without the part number 1st.. Can you give me a link to one of sellers with the same type of web site like MLCS/Grizzly/Whiteside http://woodworkersworld.net/ http://woodworkersworld.net/router_bits.shtml ========== ======= Quote:
