Default New to site

I found this site looking for a jig to make louvers. I am retired and have had a shop in my last three houses ( about 25 years). I did computers for 40 years and used the woodwork to retain my sanity, at least what little I had. After retirement I moved back home to Nashville and went to work with my oldest son. He had a trim carpentry business and did mostly high end houses. Last December he decided to move to the gulf coast and is now doing stairs full time. I have been doing a lot of work for other people since then. I do quite a few built-ins and some cabinets etc. A lady contacted me recently who has a house in an upscale area with a seven foot brick fence. She has double louvered gates that have deteriorated and wants me to build new ones. (redwood this time) As I said, I was looking for a jig to router the slots when I found this web site and thought it would be interesting to join.

Hi Larry -
Welcome to Router Forums! You have found a great site with some really fine folks who are always willing to help you in any way they can. I hope you'll browse some of the threads to get an idea of the wide scope of things that are covered here. Log in regularly and join in. No doubt, with your experience, you'll be able to contribute from time to time, too. It's a fun and informative group. Enjoy! I'm in Memphis and visit my sister in Brentwood (Nashville, guys) often. She does accessorizing for high-end homes. Maybe we can have lunch sometime. I'm not sure what kind of louvre slots you're trying to cut, but I'll bet some of the folks here can help. Again, glad you are here... Welcome!

Roger

Hi Larry

Two type of louvers the norm...for gates
Some are a slot in the top and bottom parts of the frame and the 2nd type are the type you see in windows the norm.

The 1st. type are easy to make with a small jig that you can use with the brass guide on the router table..

I will not go into the 2nd one unless you ask, it's bit harder to make and you need a spec.router bit to make the slats.

see small drawing below. for the jig.

Thanks to all you guys. I found the jig I needed at Norm's site(NYWS) by seeing a reply that one of the members had posted some time back. I started looking at the site and thought it would be interesting to be a member. I don't spend a lot of time on the computer anymore, just when needed. I guess forty years of sitting with one of them kind of limits my excitement. Still, it is a great tool. Look forward to participating in some discussions.
