| Registered User New Member | I am basically a newbie to router speak. I was surfing the net for reviews on routers when I found your forum and decided to join in. I am in the market for a new router - my old (1975-1976) Craftsman 1 1/2 hp doesn't have enough oomph to do what I want to start doing with a router. After much reading of reviews, I am about 75% settled on the 2 1/4 hp Porter Cable, but want to do some more research on Freud an Ridgid. So I will be watching and reading your forum very closely. My local Lowe's and Home Depot carry these routers, so I have inspected them as closely as one can in the store. |

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | Tree, of the choices you mentioned I would go with the Ridgid. The LED work lights are a nice feature. We get nothing but good reviews on the Freud models so these would be fine as well. The PC 890 series routers are very popular with owners... if they got one of the good ones. This model has been troubled by a recall for bad motors, the plunge bases were built poorly to the point PC junked the tooling and redesigned the base to include dust collection. I will say after some urging they are at least making things right by owners who make a fuss over them. I would still avoid this model until all the bugs are worked out.

I spent a lot of time last night reviewing the threads and saw the downsides of the PC. I have a buddy that was giving the Ridgid serious consideration, so per your praise of the Ridgid, I too will give it a good look. Thanks again for your input. I have got to rely on you guys that have been making the chips fly a lot longer than I have. | |
