Hi zollman kommor

This is the norm for most router user,,, If you get speed control unit(s) it will help, most router bits don't need to turn at the max speed of your router...

Sound is a big key, it can be scarey having a bit spin at 24,000 rpms..I have used routers for a long time and they still scare me..

The golden rule for me, is NEVER put my hands anywhere by the bit,I always use push blocks and keep the speed down...10,000 rpms. is a big deal if you think about...

Hi Zollman. Welcome to the forums. I hope you never loose the fear. Then you will always treat the tool with the respect it deserves. Be safe and have fun!

Hi zollman kommor,
Like anything in life untill you practice practice and yet more practice, you never will get over the fear but never loose respect for your tools no mater what they are. It is like a child for the first time rideing a bike, you never think you will do it but you do.
Cheers
Pete

One of the best ways to feel more confident about using any power tool is to wear your protective gear. Yesterday I used my router for the first time in weeks, and forgot to put on my hearing protection; and that made a big difference in how I approached the machine. Once I realized what I was missing (Ear plugs), I knew why and what I needed. Don't forget the safety goggles, they do make a difference, even when you wear prescription glasses.

I guess the paradox is that we have to respect the power of these machines, yet they give so much pleasure in wood working. Keep watching Router Workshop.

Not wanting to start any major debate -- because it is largely a question of semantics -
But to me -- there is a difference between fright/fear of something -- and respecting it.
If I am afraid of something -- I am going to tend to be nervous and tense and hesitant in using it -- and that nervousness can often in itself lead to accidents - and at the very least takes away a lot of the pleasure.
If I respect something -- I understand the damage it can do if handled incorrectly -- so I make a point to learn to use it correctly and to remain alert while using it.

Two extremes I encourage people to avoid in using any tool that can kill you - whether it's a gun, a motorcycle -- or a router.
Cockiness -- that leads to carelessness
Fear -- that leads to nervousness
BOTH can lead to accidents.

So - my hope for you is that you do lose the fright.
Work with the tool, understand it -- get used to it -- become confident.
Relax -- this is supposed to be fun -- if it's not -- what's the point?
But do not lose the respect -- it's a tool - not a toy.

Hi Zollman,

I agree with many of the above comments. I've only been routing about 2 years now and it took me a while to get over the fear of using the tool. I had the usual minor mishaps with hitting knots or accidently backrouting....those things are disconcerting so what I did was slow down....make sure that everything is as solid as possible. Once I started approaching things that way, my confidence rose and my work improved. I'm sure you'll experience the same or similar types of things.

I think it's important to remember that everyone started at the beginning at one time or another. The best thing for you is that you have the resources right here on this site should you run into any problems. The people here are very willing to help in whatever way they can and especially if it is a safetly concern....so watch, learn, and listen and I think you'll be just fine.

Ed......:-)

Zollman, welcome to the RouterForums. As the other members have said, I agree. Work "SAFE" and enjoy.
