Hello, may name is Greg Erickson. I am new to woodworking, so I am sure that I will be asking a lot of questions in the future. My other interests include hunting, fishing and training my dog. I am an graphic artist by trade and do some freelance artwork on the side.

Thank you for the nice welcome. I have my first question. I actually posted it on the news forum about the Porter Cable 890 series routers. I have copied it here. I would love some answers. I don't want to start with this router and find out that it is defective.

I am new to woodworking and bought a Porter Cable 893PK a few months ago. I have not used it yet as we just built a new house and that is taking all of my time. I am wondering though, if my router would be a problem router. I bought it at Lowe's. How do I tell, if it is bad what should I look for. Thank you for your time!

First, Welcome to the forum. Porter Cable has been around forever. I have 2 porter cables and love them. They can be intimidating when you first turn one on so be careful. On high that thing cranks at 23,000 rpm. The soft start motor is nice. I would hate to think Porter Cable would make a piece of junk. Have fun with the new toy and when your ready to mount that thing under a router table come back and ask us.

Hi Greg, welcome to the router forums.

I believe that PC has corrected the problem. But, if you are concerned you may wish to read this: http://www.routerforums.com/general-...e-pc894pk.html

Hi Greg

Welcome to Router forums!!!

Besides the router baseplate problem mentioned by Ken, there was also a January 2006 recall by Porter Cable, on all 890 series router motors with certain S/Ns.

See http://www.routerforums.com/lobby/42...le-recall.html for information on the recall and for the affected serial numbers.

All new 890 series motors are suppose to have a " T " above the "PORTER+CABLE" nameplate and are unaffected by the recall.
