| Registered User New Member | Hi - I am new to this forum, so decided to introduce myself. I am new to woodworking, but have completed some very successful projects. One was a very cool saddle rack which would allow you to clean the top side of the saddle and then flip it over and clean the underside - using an A-frame and V-frame design with shelves underneath. I saw it in a tack store, took some pictures and then reproduced it in my workshop. It was made of red oak and this was the first time I had used a router - all the edges were nicely routed - no nails, all dowels. It came out great. The other project was a brush box for all of my horse grooming supplies. I made it out of walnut - dove tailed the box, joined pieces together with biscuits - trimmed it with brass - it's beautiful and I had a great time making it. So, now the bug has bit me and I want to do more! I used to watch my father do stuff like this, guess I learned more than I had thought. My next project is a big sign for the barn - but I need to make letters about 8 inches tall and have found that templates for letters are only 2 1/2 inches at best - saw a post on this forum as to how to do it with the letters drawn on the wood and then routed but was unclear on how to replace the base of the router with plexiglass. Here is the excerpt from that post: 'I replaced the base of the router with a piece of 1/4 inch plexiglass that is about a foot square to give it a large foot print, and drilled a hole on two opposing sides and mounted a couple of dowels for handles to guide the router. All routing is done free hand.' Can anyone tell me how to do this (replace the base)? And any other tips on doing a sign? Thanks all! |

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | You remove the sub base plate from your router and use it to mark out the screw locations and center hole on your large replacement material. You will find photos of this process by reading the forums. There are several good posts on making signs as well.
