I was searching for info on a new router when I came across this forum. I have been woodworking off and on for about 30 years (mostly off!!!). I had an old 1hp Craftsman router with 1/4" collet. It was past time to upgrade. I retired from 30 years in education in 2002 and built a 24'x24' shop to resume my woodworking hobby. Hope to use this forum to enhance my enjoyment of my "new" hobby.

Fred, the good news is most name brand routers will do the job. The tough part is deciding on which has the controls operating the way that is most comfortable to you. Nobody can tell you which will feel best in your hands so it is time for some travel to get your hands on as many different models as possible. A good reference point is to start with Bosch in the HP range you are looking for. Odds are the grips on one brand will feel better to you than others offer. Some controls have you squeeze the plunge lever to lock, others to un-lock. Most staff members own Bosch but that does not mean it is the right choice for you. Let us know what you end up choosing and how you like it.

Thanks for the advice. I bought the Bosch 1617 kit with fixed and plunge base last week. I have it mounted on my table saw top wing and drilled a hole to allow for above the table adjustments. Now it's time to put it through its paces......
