Newbie to routing signs and here to learn from all you experienced folks. It appears you are limited by the selection letter/font/size templates. Most of what I've found on the internet are standard block letters.

Welcome to the forums, ChiefJohn

You are mostly correct on the style of lettering using a hand router and jigs. The alternative to hand routing is carving or CNC routing.

Using the CNC method you can achive 3d pieces as well as your lettering.

Welcome
John

Hi chiefjohn, you may like to have a peep at this freehand sign that I routed last year.using a suitable computer programme, I used Corel Print House, choose the font and size then print it as a banner, place this on the wood with carbon paper beneath then off you go. Good look and don't forget to ask questions if needed.

Chiefjohn, even though I've been routing for more years that I care to remember, that sign was my first attempt at freehand routing, and I was amazed how easy it was but you must use a plunge router. Get stuck into it and ask questions whenever necessary.
