| Registered User Jr. Member | Greetings to You All! I 'Googled' in "pantograph woodwork tool router", and your site was about the 6th down the list. But it was my first choice! I'm fairly active on the air gun forum (Y.F.) and your forum is another one that I am reaching out to for information. Decades ago (1970's) Sears had for sale a router pantograph in their stores. It was boxed about 36" long and 10"X6" IIRC (if i recall correctly). Seems like it retailed for about $59.00 (1970 USD). The box had a big color picture of a straight 36" table leg carved with a double helix pattern (like the pillars of the alter in St. Peters Cathedral). I was young back then and 60 bucks was a lot of money for such an extravagant "toy". It seems to me that by the photograph on the box ,that it could reproduce in three dimensions? XY&Z? Now for the question. Who among you has knowledge of what I am speaking, and where may one nowadays obtain such a device for a reasonable sum? My objective is to take a plastic gun stock off one of my German pellet rifles and use that as a pantograph pattern for sculpting or at least 'roughing' a facsimile into wood. I have reason to believe that such a market exists for this endeavor. My recent forced retirement (Cancer and side effects of Radiation/Chemotherapy) have led me back to my first love of wood finishing in my garage when ever it is that I am able to stand for a few hours a day. I hope this is not too much request all in one post. I will certainly appreciate any and all info you may have on this large router pantograph from Sears in the 1970's or other similar devices and their specific capabilities. Thanks for listening. doug,P.

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | Welcome Doug. You can still find the Sears unit on Ebay, and there is another company that makes a similar item. Perhaps the easiest way to reproduce a 3 dimensional object is with a Carvewright machine.(CompuCarve at Sears) Read the postings under Jigs and Fixtures and CNC Routing for more information.

| Registered User Jr. Member | Thanks for the greetings. I spent several hours yeaterday, cruising the forum and the 'Carvewright' demo page. IIRC, the old Sears unit had a cable and pully operated Router carriage that moved back and forth on two of four aluminum tubes held together in a black plastic end housing on each end. I remember standing in front of the box and thinking, "Man that looks complicated". I guess that's why I donj't have one today. I never throw anything away, especially any tool.

| Registered User Jr. Member | Thanks BObj3! I found both items on e-bay just like you said. Unfortunately neither seller sounded confident that they knew how it still works or if all the parts may still be there. I wouldn't mind gambling $40-$45 bucks to see. But not much more than that. Since Shipping Alone is stated as $60.00.

| Registered User Jr. Member | Hey Bob! I just re-read your post, and I clicked on your thumbnail. This Time I can see your 'up and running' "Recreator" . Great Pic.! Now I know what they look like. What is your assessment as to whether I would be able to fit two rifle stock pieces into that device for replication? Do-able? or not enough room? Sturdy enough or could modifications be made ? I would appreciate your honest opinion. P.S.: What brand/type is your router as shown? That would be yet another additional cost I must consider. Thanks, doug,P.

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi Doug " fit two rifle stock pieces " Maybe it will move about 20" from the front to back..and about 16" from side to side, so it's hard to say, or to say it's do-able for most gun stocks....without resetting the holder for both parts....but it would be easy to move the holder to the front or back to get the job done...The guide rod has two ends one is 1/4" wide and the other end is 1/8" wide.... one for a ruff cut and one for a clean up cut... I took of the junk Craftsman router off and put on a Var. speed Roto-zip motor...that can take on 1/8" shank bit and 1/4" shank bits.. You can get 1/8" shank bits that go down to .010 for the fine jobs.. http://search.ebay.com/CRAFTSMAN-ROU...Zm37QQfromZR40 ======== Quote:
