Default Brand new to this and very overwhelmed...

Hi! My name is Lisa and I'm extremely passionate about working with wood. It's hard though, because most people (especially sales people in the tool sections of hardware stores) don't get that a woman actually wants to do woodwork. I really don't have any technical background, it's all been "hobby type stuff". My full time job pays for the toys and I've just learned by doing. I'm ready to get started in freehand routing and am looking to you guys for advice and assistance. Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully I'll be able to add my "two cents worth" in this forum!

A warm welcome Lisa.

I understand your problem in the wood industry. My daughter is 27 and working for a building supply company as a assistant manger (been with them 7 years) and working her way up was a chore. She was faced with many challenges the average man wouldn't, but like you has a strong desire to work in the industry.

Don't give up or get frustrated, this is a creative industry, I don't remember creativity going to men alone.

I am more a jig or template person, if I was to try free hand,, well lets say it would not be pretty.

Glad you decided to join us.

Hi Lisa...
boy I could tell you stories about discrimination!

But I also could tell you that I can make anything the guys here can make.
Feel free to send me a private message if you have any direct questions for me.

Enjoy creating!

Atta girl Lisa,

Nowhere does it say that woodworking is a man's domain only. There are many talented ladies on this forum. As John says, I don't believe creativity was only for a man to have.....

I believe here that the playing field is much more level than in the 'real' world.

Ed......:-)

Lisa, you might enjoy reading my blog: "Sawdust dreams" in the blog section. It was written to assist new woodworkers with some of the most commonly asked questions. You will find no discrimination here. There are all talent levels and everyone is welcome.

PS to Julie: Anything we can make huh? Ok toots... chocolate chip cookies at 15 paces.

Lisa, Welcome to one of the friendliest hobby sites on the 'net. One of my local Rockler stores in Seattle has a couple of ladies working there. I find them every bit as informed as any of the guys. Creativity and imagination go hand in hand. Remember to work safely and provide pictures for Harry. -Derek

A warm welcome to the forum Lisa, as Derek mentioned, I do like photo-shoots and suspect that most if not all other members feel the same, it's just that it's me who has to keep the dream alive!

Welcome Lisa. I have a Niece that makes her living with woodworking.
She tells me that if she gets the "you're female" treatment, she goes someplace else.
