Default intro

Howdy folks. My name is Vern, I am 60 years of age and have beenworking with wood as an art form and a love affair for over 40 years. I have a degree in Fine Arts and make sculptural containers and furniture and "things" that sometimes include silver and gold and semi-precious stones. I try to create art or at least beauty and love my work. I am a member and part owner of an art co-op/gallery/gift shop in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and also show my work in other galleries, mostly in the northwest. I hope I don't sound to full of myself...I am not used to this...I am new to computers and illiterate at it. I hope I can be of use others, but I am mainly concerned with learning from you all.

Right now I am designng and building a 2'x2'x4' cedar lined, walnut hope chest and need expert help. I want to make machine cut dovetailed corners
but cannot afford one of the better jigs that are big enough to do the job. Some years ago I saw plans for a very well made dovetail jig/machine, in a 15-20 page non-glossy woodworking periodical. Can anyone here help me to locate this, or furnish me with good and understandable plans? I will be very, very grateful for any help and advice, sincerely, Vern.

Welcome Vern. There are several solutions to making accurate dovetails and you will find them in our jigs and fixtures section. Another decorative joint worth considering is the box or finger joint. Of course this will depend on the look you are going for but with todays glues strength will not be an issue. Let me suggest you visit Oak Park and look at their unique dovetail jig. There is an option for heart shaped dovetails as well as a modified dovetail. You will find a link at the top of our home page under preferred stores.

Vern,

you could always try the template master from stots.com.

http://stots.com/tm.htm

I also seem to remember that Troy Sexton of popular woodworking had an article a few years back (2003 or 2004) on making a quick and dirty dovetail guide for his router. I'll see if I can find it and see what technique he used.

That sounds like shopnotes magazine.

The one in PW was for half blind dovetails, I'm sure you were thinking of thru dovetails. It's the Jan 04 issue.

Basically, you take a piece of scrap the same width as your stock and lay out the spacing of your tails. Use a dado stack or a router bit set to 11/16ths to plow out where you marked the tails. put a template guide and dovetail bit in your router and cut the pins in your stock by following the template you just made.

Use the pins you just cut to transfer the layout of the tails and cut them out with a bandsaw or backsaw.

It might work for thru dovetails as well.

just a thought,
