Default hey guys !

Came across this forum from a link on DIY Audio, and thought I better sign up so I can start honing my router skills

I've got a nice (borrowed) Dewalt Plunge Router that I use for 90 % speaker building, and 10 % home projects.

I made a circle jig out of masonite since I'm too cheap to buy one . . . I use it for making circular openings for my speaker projects, and this last weekend I used it to make adapter plates so I could drop in 12 inch speakers into my latest Open Baffle speakers which I cut for 15 inch speakers . . .

looking forward to learning alot !

Once I get all the pictures taken, I'll go ahead and post some pictures of my work . .

Hi hot.rod.audio

Sounds like your jig is doing just fine, BUT you may want to take a hard look at the Jasper Jig, it's made for what you are doing,,plus it can do so much more.

Also if you do a search on the forum for the Jasper you will see a way to rework the Jasper so all you will need to do is drop the router into the jig and cut your circular openings easy and quick and right on the button every time..no need to screw and unscrew it from your router base.

Hot Rod Audio indicates that you specialise in car audio, if this is so the sound pressure levels from systems using 15" sub woofers with currently available power amps. can and do reach levels in excess of 140 decibels, similar to a jet taking off, such levels WILL cause acute hearing problems in the future and such high level low frequencies can cause internal organ damage. The above are FACTS, do take them seriously.

no worries harry - my high SPL car audio days are loooooooong gone - I think it's an evolution - you can only reach a certain level of fidelity in a car - Soundstage and Imagin is for sh*t I'm now a vintage audio / DIY audio freak I'm into all the old tube amplifiers, console stereos, and especially the speakers . . . they dont make 'em like they used to, thats for sure.

For my DIY projects, I use primarily vintage speaker drivers (30+ years old). I've attached a few shots (router specific of course )

I have looked at the Jasper Jig, and will likely get one sooner or later . . . thanks for the tips bobj3 - I'll check out those threads . . .

(forgive the blurry shot here) . . . these are the latest - open baffle design, based on an old Japanese design . . . . I'm in the process of making spacer rings so I can drop in any number of my vintage speakers . . . currently, they house c.1960 Zenith 15's, with some Radio Shack Ribbon tweeters for the highs . . . all run off a Magnavox Tube Amp

THESE are my monsters .. . open baffle line arrays with vintage (c. 1964) KLH drivers, and Karlson-style 'bass-bins' with BIG Altec 15 inch woofers. I wont bore you with the details on these, suffice to say I can achieve live-concert level dynamics . . . they are VERY power hungry though . . . I used $8 Ikea wall mount CD racks for the grilles

these I built (mostly) for my wife . . . . little Jensen 8 inch fullrange drivers mounted on slide-out baffles that fit within our Ikea shelving unit, also run off of a vintage Magnavox tube amp . . .

Last but not least, my garage speakers. . . German Isophon 6 X 9's mounted on Ikea 'scrap' preveneered particle board panels . . . only problem with these is they are ovals - my freehand router skills really stink . . .

thanks for the warm welcome guys ! look forward to learning alot and sharing my projects . . . .

1964 VINTAGE!!!!!! That was the year that I arrived in Australia from England, having already spent 17 years in the audio/TV repair business. Some of those 15" woofers needed something like 10 to 20 watts just to get the cone moving! when re-coning some of these monsters I could almost get my fingers in the air gap it was so wide (a bit of an exaggeration) but this is why they were so inefficient, they were the days before all the exotic rare earth magnets came into being, which, coupled with smaller air gaps increased speaker efficiency dramatically.

Looking great hot.rod,

Your area of the world seems to be just a rocking. What style of music do you prefer?

Have a great day
