Default Pattern Routing

Hello,

I would like to do some pattern routing and I am wondering the best way to secure the pattern to the project. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Dean. Welcome to our little corner of the 'net. I've had good results with pattern routing using double sided tape. As to how much, it all depends on the size of your pattern, but you don't need as much as you might think.

Hi Dean, and welcome to the forums.

I usually use the same as Brian, the double sided tape. On some projects I have been able to screw it to the workpiece. (if the scew holes did not matter)

Welcome
John

Hi Dean,
Welcome to the forums!!! Go to your local hardware store and pick up a roll of double sided carpet tape. It sticks and holds well and then separates easily with little or no residue. The carpet tape is in very common use among woodworkers for attaching patterns/templates. I've had good luck using it.

Dean, I don't know why more people don't use one, but I use a vacuum clamp. I could probably have a piece clamped and cut out before most people could get though their tape setup, especially for more than one piece. The tape works very good if you are just going to cut out a piece or two, but if you are going to cut out more I would definitely search the internet on how to setup a vacuum clamp. After you get the vacuum clamp setup, you will find many other uses for it in the shop.

Hi Dean

You can make a vacuum clamp easy with a pump...
Mike did post one , I'm sure you will find it on the forum if you check out his Gallery

Dean, it sounds like you are new to routing and if this is so it would be remiss of me not to mention that there are alternative and safer ways to make exact copies of the same item than the one proposed. This method uses female templates which, with perhaps an ellipse being the exception, are easy to make.
Here is a link to a photo.from a thread of mine dated Feb.17th 07 named "an alternative way to hold stock.
Happy and safe routing, any questions, just ask and ye shall receive answers from many members.

Default Pattern Routing

Thank you to all that responded to my question.

I tried the double stick tape and it worked perfectly.

Thanks again.
