| Jigs and Fixtures This area will be directed towards the art of designing specific jigs and fixtures. Bob and Rick say, "if the specific operation is to make more than one piece the same size and shape then chances are you need a jig and/or fixtures." |

| Registered User Forum Geek | I am starting to use and enjoy the Katie jig. I do experience tear out. I use mine on a router table. I need a thin wood or something to use to reduce the tear out. I thought about 1/4 inch MDF but I wonder if it will dull the bits because of the high glue content. I don't really want to spend hours cutting down pine into thin peices. Any ideas? Steve Bolton |

| Registered User Supreme Forum King | Hi SB, For a backer, I don't think a 1/4" piece of MDF is going to hurt the bit. If you are worried about it though, you may to look at some poly instead. I think Rocklers and other places sell small strips. ![]()

| Registered User Forum Geek | The 1/4 mdf may not be a factor as that is what the main backer is made of. Is MDF and 1/4 inch hardboard the same thing? I also have 1/8 inch hardboard. Would that work? Thanks sb |

Hi SB, To answer the first question, No, they aren't the same thing. From what I've read an have been told, hardboard is probably worse on bits than MDF. My work with hardboard is rather limited I'm afraid, so, I can't really say. Sorry.

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi SB Just my 2 cents, pickup some 1/8" MDF and use it,,, put the hardboard in the trash can, man do I hate that stuff..... It will dull router bits in a heart beat.. Hardboard = cardboard and tons of glue...almost as bad as laminated flooring=========
