Jigs and Fixtures This area will be directed towards the art of designing specific jigs and fixtures. Bob and Rick say, "if the specific operation is to make more than one piece the same size and shape then chances are you need a jig and/or fixtures."

Question Jig for Incrajig

I've been using my Incrajig system for boxes, drawers and the like. I now have a project where I need to cut dovetail over the course of a board 36" long. The throw on the Incra is maxed at 18". I'm thinking I need a way (possilby a jig) to accurately move the piece along the table fence, incrementally, rather than use the 90 degree support. Just wondering how others handle such a challenge.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Taliesin

I don't recall putting in 36" of dovetails in one board but I have a jig to put in 1/2" box joints slots that work as well as dovetails...when the board gets that long..

BUT if you are want to stick with the dovetail way you can use the type of jig in the 3rd. snapshot, do 18" long and then move the stock over and then do the next 18".......

This jig will hold both both parts for the dovetail , one on each side of the jig, in that way they will line up ,but it's tricky setup...

How about the Oak-Park boxjoint jig in the 1/2" size?

That's pretty much what I'm looking for. I just wonder about the accuracy of moving the jig to the next section. If I'm off a bit it won't affect the piece. I also talked with someone who suggested used standard steel stock, from Home Depot, predrilled with holes spaced every X inches mounted to 2" oak stock.

Thanks,

Hi Taliesin

The accuracy is base on you,,, how much time and care you take to line up the 2nd group...the jig works well,(both) that's to say if you make a plug ,5/8' wide on one end and 1/2" on the other end then just push it in the Alum.jig to line things up...for the 2nd group..or 3rd. pass., make two to be on the safe side....your band saw works well for making the plug(s) out of hardwood...

I'm not to sure about drilling holes in steel plate,, they are always off just abit and they need to be dead on, if you want them to fit without using a 10lb. hammer to get boards to fit... two or three not to bad but 36 of them well....it would take a CNC machine to drill the holes dead on...
