How can I make a jig to place holes? I'm making a golf ball rack. It has a piece in the middle that will have through holes. The two sides don’t have through holes. Each piece is approximately three feet long and I need the holes to be spaced two inches apart with one inch between the two side by side. I can get the two side by side on the drill press with a spacer but I haven’t figured out how to feed in two inch increments. Thanks Bigh,

A simple jig that won't take longer to make than it would to drill the holes would be to mark a board with the desired increments. Drill the first hole with the jig attached to the fence, then align the first mark on the jig to the end of your board, making sure you don't move the board, and clamp the jig to the fence. Then slide the end of the board to the next mark and drill the next hole. Repeat as necessary.

Never tried it with larger holes --
But for spacing holes for shelf pins --
I've had pretty good luck just using a strip of pegboard.

Pegboard is the easiest way to layout equal spacing. Most brands have the holes on 1" centers so life is simple. This will let you position the golf ball holes with ease. Once you have drilled your holes in the ends of the center board you can use a couple of dowel centers which go in the holes to transfer their location to the side boards, if that is what you were asking about. Dowel centers come in different sizes to match common dowels and are only a couple dollars a package.

Each of those ideas will work fine, however I do think that Bj's is the way that I would go, it's so simple but will give perfect results every time even if a ten year old were left to do the job.
