| Registered User Forum Fanatic | this is reds_21, i am hoping that there are any computer gurus out there that can help me or atleast get me closer to the answer............... a while back my hard drive took a dump and i had to replace it. once i did that i am finding that my computer is not reading my cd burner. i have unplugged the cd burner and turned off the computer and turned the computer back on and the computer doesn't act as if anything is unplugged. then i turned the computer off and plugged the burner back in and repowered it back up. the computer doesn't tell me that there is new hardware and if i go into windows explorer it doesn't even show that there is an "e" drive where the burner is. BUT if i hit the eject button, there is power and the indicator light blinks and everything so it's obvious its getting power to it. why does the computer not act as if there is a drive there?????? anyone know???? shawn |

| Registered User Forum Fanatic | Shawn, It sounds like you've lost the driver for your CD drive. If you know the make and model number of your CD drive you can probably get a free download from the manufacturer over the web. Obviously, if you have the drivers on a CD you can not access the files. If you can get the drivers from the manufacturers web site just load them then reboot your system and the system should recognize the new drive. These kinds of problems are never easy to diagnose via e-mail so I'd suggest you take your system to a repair shop if you can not get the drivers loaded. Bill |

| Registered User Supreme Forum King | If these are IDE drives what does it say when the bios is booting? If the HD is the only one showing up then the operating system is never going to find the CD..... My wild guess would start with looking to see if the HD is jumper as master and the CD to slave??? OR.... an unplugged cable?? Ed Last edited by reible; 11-10-2005 at 08:17 PM. |

| Registered User Forum Fanatic | Ed, I think you are right. The more I think about it the most likely cause of Shawn's problem is a disconnected, or partially connected, cable and not a software issue. Shawn, There are 3 cables to check. 1. a 4 position power cable. 2. a wide ribbon cable that must be seated properly. make sure no pins are bent on the back of your CD drive. They are very fragile. 3. a tiny connector for audio. If you have power to the drive I'd suggest you look at how the wide ribbon cable is seated. Check for bent pins on the back of your CD drive. If one is bent it can be straighted out (very carefully) with a small screw driver or tiny needle nose pliers. Be careful not to bend any other pins.. Bill |

| Retired Moderator Forum Geek | Good to hear it is solved. I have gone through 2 CD Roms and 1 CD burner on this Gutway of mine since I have owned it. I think they use junk parts. LOL. But will build my next one.
