| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | A post I answered reminded me of my arrival at Ft. Eustis, VA, I had just finished basic training and was ready to start my schooling. I arrived there with 2 weeks until the start of the next class. When you are not assigned duty they assist you in keeping busy by awarding you with pleasant jobs such as pulling weeds, sweeping dusty warehouse buildings, etc. I completed my assigned duties early and had to report to the 1st Sgt for more keep busy work till the work day was over. As I was standing there waiting for my next pleasant experience his pen caught in a gash in his desk top and ripped the report he was working on. He was less than pleased by this. Knowing an opportunity when I saw one I offered to repair his desk top. He liked the idea and sent me to the supply Sgt for what I needed. A bit of sanding revealed a beautiful oak desk top under the brown paint. A short conversation later I was in charge of a detail of 4 soldiers who were sanding the desk under my "expert supervision". It's amazing what 2 days of sanding can do for an old desk. Some antique oak stain and 3 coats of spray polyurethane completed the job. It came out great. You might think the 1st Sgt was pleased, he was not. As we were moving his desk back into his office the CO came walking in. He took one look at the desk and it went straight to his office, the 1st Sgt getting his old one. The CO was pleased and assigned me a position tending the go kart track (Which was mostly driving the go karts) until my schooling started. So you see? Woodworking really does improve your life.
