Default How would you do this?

I have been asked by our pastor to modify two pedestals that hold two half-lifesize stone statues. He wants to install a door and shelves into them. They are about 44 inches tall and 22 inches square. Too small to get into and cut from the inside. I do not have a saber saw that would cut that straight either.
My current thought is to raise my narrow kerf blade on my table saw, up into one face of the pedestal after careful measurement and marking both on the inside of the pedestal and on the fence face and then finishing the corner cuts with a handsaw. Any tips or suggestions on other procedures?

Hi Opa

I'm almost sure it's not soild, I would suggest take it down to parts and do it right from the getgo... short cuts almost never look good in the end.

Thanks for your input. This is a finished and well glued item that could be destroyed if I tried to take it apart.

Can you provide a photo of the bases? This would simplify by eliminating random guessing at their construction.

I'm too much of a computer novice, even with a new Apple, to be able to get a picture into the computer, much less then find it and send it. I am better with tools however. The bases are as described, open bottom, completely hollow. The inside corners are reinforced with small glued in blocks. Need any more information? Opa
