Default Type of wood question

Hey guys and girls, I didn't know exactly where to place this question, so I hope it's okay to ask here.
I have an order to make an outdoor sign for an auto dealer. He wants it to be 8' long and 4' high. I was going to route the letters into the wood and then paint and seal.
The sign will be used in a humid climate (mid-southern states), and will be either post mounted or mounted on the side of one of his buildings (he hasn't decided yet).
Any suggestions on what type (including thickness) of wood to use for this application? Also, would a metal edge be in order for this type of thing?
Sorry for the newbie questions, but I REALLY appreciate any advice.

Hi BlackBelt,

Not sure a metal edging would be required unless for a decorative look. Moisture likes to hide behind such things. We have several sign makers as members, I'm sure someone can give you a better answer than I as for what wood type.
