| Registered User Forum Fanatic | Hi Mike Doyle here. I just called Porter Cable, 8:00 am 6/28/07, in regards to my PC 890 router sub-base. They did not ask any questions. They had me hold the line for a bit. Then came back on line and asked me for my mailing address, stating that they would send another sub-base right away. I am sure that PC's response is due to your efforts regarding the 890 router problem. I want to thank you for your efforts and I am again glad I found Router Forums. Much thanks - Doyle

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | The "Improved" bases are available now as announced in emails this past week. I'm not holding my breath waiting to see how much improved they are.

| Registered User Dedicated Member | I have recently had a warranty replacement on my 895 plunge router...my last base wobbled on as I pushed down. They told me there should be a little give but not as much as mine was doing. I opened up the box to see a different base (3 weeks ago) and it looks quite different...they replaced it with a vacum handled one and it just seems to be much more solid, both appearance wise as well as use wise. I can only assume that they replaced my base with the new edition and I am quite please with that. Allison |

It looks like PC is coming through for it's customers and sending out new plates.

| Registered User New Member | Hello, this is my first post, there is so much great info here! I am completely new to routing and decided to to take the plunge on a couple of projects for my house. I decided to buy an 893PK based on the fact that I own lots of PC tools and have never had a problem. I opened up the box and was a bit disappointed right off the bat with the interlocking cases, they seem low quality, and are difficult to get them closed but what the heck it's just a case. I took the router out and it looked great. I took it out of the fixed base and put it into the plunge base, extremely easy to do. Things were looking up until I adjusted clear plastic depth indicator, which was loose, so I went to tighten it and it broke off!! I barely put any pressure on the thing. I then tried the plunging action and it was terrible. Extremely choppy, not smooth at all. Also found that the clear base plate wobbled, you can see the collett move when you slide the router around. I was very disappointed. What the heck is PC doing, such poor quality control. I took it back to Lowe's and the manager let me look inside another kit but it had the same issues. I ended up buying a Bosch 1617 and it came with an extra box of accessories which was cool with me, granted I don't know what they are for, yet! The Bosch is nice, plunging action is silky smooth. I searched the net for this PC wobbly base problem and that's how I cam across this forum, so at least one positive thing came out of it. I also ordered a router table from oak park since I just want to get started and not build one. It will hopefully arrive this week! Talk about customer service. A lady(don't recall her name for sure, Sandy perhaps) from oak park called me regarding my order. I ordered some parts that were duplicated in another kit that I ordered and she wanted to make sure I was aware of this. How nice is that. She removed the duplication and also informed me that the plunge base on the Bosch has different mounting holes than their fixed base and asked me if I still wanted the table, heck yea I want the table. I believe most use the fixed base anyway, is this correct? Are there limitations to using the fixed base versus the plunge base? I figure I can drill holes for the plunge if need be. Anyway it was just a positive experience. |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi B_Rod "I believe most use the fixed base anyway, is this correct? " "Are there limitations to using the fixed base versus the plunge base?" This is true if you are mounting a smaller router the norm,,,( 1 1/2- to 2 1/2 HP ) but when it comes to the big routers (3 to 3 1/2HP ) then it's time to remove the springs in the plunge base the norm.. But I don't ![]() I still want to use the big router as a plunge router and because it's mounted to a drop in plate like in the Oak-Park table it's easy to pop it out and use it with the big 11" x 11" base plate in place.. MOst of the plunge base router have a small opening in the bottom of the base and the standard base have a big opening and will let you use the bigger bits easy.. Plus you are going to mount it to the Oak-Park pop out plate, it's easy to change or set the bits.....or you just unlock the motor and slip it out and sit in on the table top and install the bits...poping out the plate can be a pain if you have the fence in place and you don't want to change the setting on the fence...this is true when you are using a matched set of bits...e.g. R & S bit set...or many bits without bearing on them. You did buy the line up pin and brass guide with your Oak-Park table and plate RIGHT ?, it will made it easy to drill and mount your router to the new plate.. http://us.oak-park.com/catalogue.htm...&product=CR043 http://us.oak-park.com/catalogue.htm...product=SGP010 enjoy your new setup.. ![]()

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | A Bosch 1617 in an Oak Park table, sounds like a good idea to me. Mount the fixed base and you will be very happy with it.
