Default Harry Potter

Well, the new movie is coming out soon, and my oldest wanted a Harry Potter birthday party. That meant Dad had to make wands, for everyone.

The quick and dirty wands were for the party favors, the fancy wand was a thank you gift for one of the Mom's who helped out. The wands for the kids were made with blunt ends, and kind of beefy construction because there were kids as young as 4 at the party.

I have five more blanks in the garage that are already spoken for. I guess as soon as the wood dries just a little bit more I'll be turning some more!

All are router turnings. The kids LOVED them

Pretty cool Doug! Nice job... could be used for other things as well... bigger ones would classify as a bonker!

The big one is about 16 inches long. The others are about a foot long -- and we did have to break up a handful of 'swordfights' during the party!

Doug for one I guess I didn't realize you were a turner as well. You do nice work! What did you start with, 1 inch pieces of stock?

Corey, thanks for the compliment!

Most were 1-1/8 dowel to start, some were made from poplar logs, I've got a few other blanks that I just sawed out of some kind of maple logs.

All of them were turned with a router on the Legacy Mill, so I don't consider myself a woodturner per se. I don't turn well on a traditional wood lathe, much better on a South Bend metalworking lathe.

Very Nice Doug

I'm sure the kids will have fun with them,,,,It makes me recall when my son came home from school one day and had a doz. or so Alum. bats (about the same size as your wands) he made in shop and was selling them ...to the kids for just a bit of protection that they could but under the car seat.....had to put a stop to that real quick....but I'm sure the kids you made the wands for are not driving yet

When I was a kid it was a wooden swords and rubber band guns made out of red rubber inter tubes but I guess the more things change the more they stay the same

It's great that you made the kids some toys and I'm sure they will recall it one day also...

Hi Doug,

I'm not much of a fan of Harry Potter, so I don't know the significance of a wand... haven't really watched any of the movies (maybe I should)... previews always seemed to be way out, off the wall, stuff...

Anyway, I have a friend who is a real fan... I guess she would like a "wand"...
Can you tell me what your dimensions are? Don't have a lathe, but I may work something out... Is this a big thing with fans?

Your wands look very nice! Do you hand carve the handles? Which end IS the handle? Do you hand carve the fancy-wide end?

Thank you...

Looks like the party is going to be FUN for all attending!
Happy Happy to all....

edit: saw you used the Legacy Mill... that's a real setup!!

Joe,

The handles were all made with a mill, basically the same as cutting threads on a metal lathe. Just calculate some pitches, find a profile you like on a router bit, and away you go. Kind of cheating, but fun to make. The tapered fluting is done by setting up a dividing plate and passing the router back and forth.

Oh my... the Legacy mill. Nice piece of equipment there Doug. I guess I did read the other day you stole that on C-list. Lucky dog... of course at 2 grand I guess I can't say you stole it but that's a cool machine.

Harry (Potter) would be proud to own one of your wands Doug. I especially like the Mom's wands.
